Wireless CarPlay Startup: Connect Sooner After Power-On
Wireless CarPlay startup is for cars that already connect to CarPlay wirelessly. It starts the car’s wireless network and CarPlay software sooner after a cold start, and opens CarPlay as soon as the phone connects. On the test car, wireless CarPlay was up about 55 seconds after power-on instead of about 71.
Wired CarPlay and Android Auto are unaffected. The option does not add wireless CarPlay to a car that lacks it or turn a wired connection into a wireless one. CarPlay and Android Auto on Mazda Connect covers the hardware side.
What changes on the car
Section titled “What changes on the car”From a cold start, the stock software puts nearly all startup work on the first of the CMU’s two processor cores, and Wi-Fi and CarPlay wait behind it. With this option:
- Wi-Fi and CarPlay start on the second core, which is less busy during startup.
- Network setup is quicker. The wireless CarPlay firewall rules load in one step, with the same rules as stock.
- CarPlay opens by itself. When a CarPlay session starts, Mazda Connect switches to CarPlay without a tap on its icon and clears the Reconnecting Apple CarPlay notice. It does this once per connection, and not when CarPlay is already on screen or Mazda’s data-use notice is waiting for an answer.
Why ScreenTune is faster explains the core scheduling.
Measured on one car: about 16 seconds sooner
Section titled “Measured on one car: about 16 seconds sooner”| CarPlay session active | Stock | ScreenTune with Wireless CarPlay startup |
|---|---|---|
| Typical cold start | ~71 s | ~55 s |
| Range across captured boots | 64.9–84.8 s | 51.3–71.4 s |
The ScreenTune boots also included the test car’s other ScreenTune changes, and most of the gain comes from this option. The last stretch before CarPlay is partly the phone’s own Wi-Fi and CarPlay handshake, which the CMU cannot speed up, so results vary by phone and by boot. Boot benchmarks lists every capture and its limits.
Turn it on or off
Section titled “Turn it on or off”New orders. In the configurator, select Wireless CarPlay startup on the Add-ons step. Its card changes from Add for free to Added. It is off unless you add it.
Existing customers. In My ScreenTune, open Change features, add or remove Wireless CarPlay startup on Add-ons, and request the updated package (add or change ScreenTune features). In the car, choose UPDATE, or REPAIR if the prompt shows the version you already have.
Leave it off if the car uses only wired CarPlay or Android Auto. It has nothing to speed up.
Check that it works
Section titled “Check that it works”- Open Applications → Miatafy and select WHAT’S INSTALLED. The list should include CarPlay auto foreground.
- With your phone set up for wireless CarPlay, switch the car fully off, wait for the screen to go dark, and start it again.
- CarPlay should connect and come to the front without a tap.
If CarPlay connects but does not come to the front, insert the ScreenTune USB and choose REPAIR (repair ScreenTune). If CarPlay does not connect at all, check the phone and the car’s CarPlay setup first. The option does not change how CarPlay pairs.
Still slow to connect?
Section titled “Still slow to connect?”The last stretch before CarPlay appears is the phone’s own Wi-Fi and CarPlay handshake, which ScreenTune cannot speed up, so connect times vary by phone and from one start to the next.
- Check that it is installed. Open Applications → Miatafy → WHAT’S INSTALLED and look for CarPlay auto foreground. If it is missing, add Wireless CarPlay startup with Change features as above.
- Check which wireless CarPlay you have. Wireless CarPlay startup targets the car’s factory wireless CarPlay hardware. An aftermarket wireless adapter plugged into a USB port connects to the car as wired CarPlay and runs its own Wi-Fi, so this option is not built to speed it up, and the times above were not measured with one.
- Tune the phone and adapter side. See wireless CarPlay slow to connect for phone settings, adapter delays, and how to time a cold start.
What REMOVE restores
Section titled “What REMOVE restores”REMOVE restores the startup scripts and CarPlay interface file to their first-install baseline, the copies saved at the first ScreenTune installation. Wireless CarPlay goes back to the startup timing it had then, and CarPlay no longer comes to the front by itself. See remove ScreenTune.
