Commander Knob Skipping or Spinning Free: Clean or Replace

The commander knob is the rotary control between the seats that drives Mazda Connect, with the Music, Nav, Back, Home, Fav, and volume buttons around it. When it skips, sticks, or spins without scrolling, the fault is one of three things: a dirty or worn rotary encoder, gummed-up buttons, or a broken internal shaft. Two of those clean. One needs a new switch. Before you condemn the knob, rule out touchscreen ghost touch, because a delaminating screen invents selections that look exactly like a rogue knob.

Work this table top to bottom. The cheap, common faults are first.

The skipping knob is a worn encoder, and it is the most common true fault

The classic complaint: you rotate the dial to scroll a list or the radio dial, and instead of advancing, the highlight “just jumps back and forth left-right very quickly between whatever two options it is nearest.” Directional clicks (up, down, left, right) and the center press still work. One owner on a 2013-2016 CX-5 described it precisely: “when I rotate the dial it doesn’t keep moving in one direction. It just goes back-and-forth between what is currently highlighted and the option next to it.” (Mazdas247)

The mechanism is a rotary encoder under the knob. It reads rotation as on/off pulses on two channels, and the controller compares their timing to decide direction. When the contacts wear or pick up grime, the pulses arrive dirty, the controller can’t resolve a clean direction, and it reads the noise as one step forward, then back. Hence the jitter between two items.

Before any teardown, run the reset ladder. A battery-disconnect hard reset or a firmware update sometimes clears an intermittent encoder, and one owner’s knob “failed ~50% of startups” without ever throwing a diagnostic code (Mazdas247). The order: pull the navigation SD card and try without it, disconnect the battery, then hold Mute + Nav + Back together for at least 10 seconds (r/CX5). If the skipping survives all of that, it is the encoder, and you clean or replace.

A freely spinning knob is a broken shaft, and no cleaning fixes that

If the knob spins with no resistance and nothing scrolls in any menu, “the internal plastic shaft has likely broken,” which means the switch assembly needs replacement (Go-Parts). The detent and the encoder both ride on that shaft; once it snaps, rotation never reaches the encoder. This is mechanical, not contamination, so skip cleaning and order the switch.

Clean sticky buttons and a slow press before spending on a part

Sticky or slow buttons and a notchy center press are almost always residue, often from a spilled drink wicking into the contacts. No new part needed, but it takes real disassembly: “Console has to be removed and the commander assembly unscrewed from the console” (Mazdas247). Once the assembly is out:

  • Use high-percentage isopropyl alcohol. 90% or higher, worked into the contacts, followed by canned air and a soft toothbrush or a small hobby paintbrush. Lightly soapy water on the brush also worked for one owner.
  • Avoid WD-40. It “took off some of the black” finish.
  • Avoid aggressive contact cleaner. It can lift the silkscreen labels off the buttons and attack the plastics.

A vacuum with a brush attachment did nothing; the contamination is inside the contact gaps, not on the surface.

This cleaning is also worth trying on an intermittent skipping encoder. If the encoder is dirty rather than worn, the same alcohol-and-air treatment can restore clean pulses. If the skipping returns, the contacts are worn through and you replace the switch.

Mazda sells the commander control as a single replaceable part called the “Switch command,” and every model uses a part number in the same -66-CM0x family that differs by model and year:

  • Mazda3 switch. BHN1-66-CM0B, which supersedes -CM0A and is superseded by -CM0C. MSRP around $450, discounted online near $365 (parts.mazdausa.com).
  • Mazda6 (2014-2015). GKL1-66-CM0B. MSRP roughly $519 to $566, online around $359 (parts.mazdausa.com, TascaParts).
  • CX-5 switch. KA0G-66-CM0 or KNYL-66-CM0 depending on era; 2021-2025 CX-5 uses KGC3-66-CM0 (parts.mazdausa.com).
  • CX-9 switch. KAYG-66-CM0. This number came from a Mazda parts-site search, not a dedicated CX-9 product page; the closest live listing is the CX-5 family page (parts.mazdausa.com), so confirm the CX-9 suffix at a dealer parts desk.

These prices come from Mazda parts-site search-result snippets; the live pages block automated reads, so re-check the current MSRP and sale price before you order. Used or aftermarket switches run roughly $150 to $200 online (Mazdas247). Because the suffix changes by model and year, verify the exact number against your VIN at a dealer parts desk before ordering. The MX-5 (ND) uses the same control family, but no MX-5-specific part number was confirmed in the sources, so do not order on assumption.

A totally dead commander box is not always the switch. A 2016 Mazda3 owner swapped in a known-good unit from a scrapped car and “it still doesn’t work,” which points past the switch to the wiring, connector, or CMU (r/mazda). Replace the switch only when the fault tracks the switch, not the whole HMI.

How to tell a bad knob from touchscreen ghost touch

This is the diagnosis that saves the most money, because the look-alike is far more common than a failed knob. Ghost touch is touchscreen-side: the digitizer delaminates, and the screen registers taps that no one made. Owners describe a system that “would start moving and clicking random options all on its own… change inputs… hanging up on people… trying to make random calls,” which reads exactly like a knob with a mind of its own (r/mazda).

Two tests separate them:

  1. Test it while driving. Watch whether it misbehaves once the car is moving. On most 2014-2020 Mazda Connect cars the touchscreen is disabled the moment the car moves, and the commander knob still works. So phantom selections only when parked or stopped point at the touchscreen; misbehavior that follows you down the road and tracks your knob input points at the encoder (r/CX5 comment, Go-Parts).
  2. Pull the ribbon cable. Disconnect the touchscreen’s data ribbon. If the phantom inputs stop and the knob still controls everything, the screen was the culprit (r/CX5 comment). This is also the popular permanent free workaround for ghost touch.

A useful tell from owners: “When ghost touch takes over, the knob doesn’t do anything” (r/CX5 comment). The screen floods the controller with phantom touches and your real knob inputs get lost in the noise. If the knob goes dead at the same time the screen acts up, it is the screen.

Model year is a clue too. Mazda shipped 2020-era cars with touch disabled from the factory because ghost touch had become so widespread, so the display is “just driven from the knob” (r/CX5). A misbehaving 2020 with no touchscreen is far more likely a true knob, encoder, or CMU fault.

On cost, dealers quote roughly $250 to disconnect the touchscreen or about $500 to replace it with a one-year warranty (r/CX5 comment). A DIY aftermarket touch panel runs far less; one owner put it at around $30 (Go-Parts). Mazda’s TSB 09-003/22 (NHTSA MC-10230870-0001) for 2017-2020 CX-5 covers replacing the touch panel only, not the whole display and CMU, which keeps the repair cheap and has earned some out-of-warranty owners goodwill coverage. That TSB PDF is image-scanned, so treat the exact bulletin number and covered years as search-sourced and confirm them with a dealer before relying on them.

Some “switch not working” complaints on 7G cars are software

On 2021-2023 CX-5 and CX-9 with the newer 7G-type Mazda Connect, a “the audio selection switch does not work” complaint can be a known software bug, not hardware. Mazda’s TSB 16-002/23 (NHTSA MC-10230906-0001) fixes it with a USB software update (Ver. 7000C0A-NA03_11048 or later), a 0.2-hour warranty job. If your car is in that range, try the update before condemning the switch.
