Mazda CX-9 (2016–2020) Overview

The second-generation CX-9 (2016-2020) is Mazda’s three-row flagship: a turbocharged 2.5-liter four (Skyactiv-G 2.5T) in an upmarket cabin, running Gen 6 Mazda Connect. This page covers only what’s specific to the CX-9. For anything shared across the platform (CarPlay troubleshooting, firmware, ghost touch, slow boot), follow the links into the platform KB.

The Signature adds nappa leather and rosewood trim. The recurring knocks are a tight third row for adults and less cargo room than some rivals.

Every 2016-2020 CX-9 ships an 8-inch Mazda Connect display mounted high on the dash. Unlike the CX-5, there is no 7-inch variant — the 8-inch screen is standard across all trims and years. You drive it mainly with the Commander knob; touch input works only while parked.

YearFactory CarPlay / Android Auto
2016-2018No — official OEM retrofit only
2019 (refresh)Yes on most trims; not base Sport
2020Yes on most trims

For 2016-2018 cars and the base 2019 Sport, CarPlay/Android Auto need Mazda’s retrofit (firmware update plus a dealer-supplied USB hub). See CX-9 CarPlay for the procedure.

The most-discussed mechanical concern on 2016-2020 cars is cracked cylinder heads with coolant intrusion on some 2.5T engines. It’s uncommon but expensive, so check coolant condition and inspect for signs of intrusion on any used purchase. More on what to look for in the CX-9 buying guide.

The CX-9’s 8-inch digitizer can degrade with age, producing phantom touches and dead zones. That’s a hardware fault, not a software one — the mechanism and what (if anything) helps is on the platform ghost touch page. For general slowness, blank screens, and reboots, see Mazda Connect troubleshooting and reboot / reset.

The everyday Mazda Connect complaints (startup disclaimer, slow cold boot, beep-on-every-input, no touch while moving) are platform defaults, not CX-9-specific. They’re software-adjustable on firmware v74.00.324A via ScreenTune.
