Android Auto Communication Error 8: Check the Clock First
Communication error 8 is Android Auto reporting an authentication failure during the connection handshake, and the usual cause is a date or time mismatch between the phone and the car. Before swapping cables or clearing apps, check both clocks: the phone’s and the one on the Mazda’s screen.
This is a narrower fault than the usual silent failure where the phone charges and the screen does nothing. If you never see an error message at all, start at Android Auto won’t connect instead.
A wrong clock makes valid certificates look expired
Section titled “A wrong clock makes valid certificates look expired”When the phone and the CMU (the Connectivity Master Unit behind the dash) negotiate an Android Auto session, the handshake validates certificates, and certificates are only valid inside a date window. A clock that is far enough off, on either device, makes a valid certificate look expired or not yet valid. Validation fails, and Android Auto reports it as communication error 8 (Appuals, autoevolution).
That is why a car that connected fine yesterday can throw error 8 today with the same phone, cable, and port: the clock is the only thing that changed.
The Mazda pattern: error 8 after a dead battery
Section titled “The Mazda pattern: error 8 after a dead battery”Owner reports tie error 8 to power loss: after a dead battery, a jump start, or a battery replacement, the CMU clock can come back reset, and error 8 appears on the next plug-in. Set the clock under Settings → Clock on the car’s screen, check the date and not just the time, and plug in again. That alone clears this pattern.
Fix order: clocks first, re-pair last
Section titled “Fix order: clocks first, re-pair last”Work top to bottom.
- Phone clock to automatic. Settings → System → Date & time, turn on automatic date, time, and time zone. A manually set time that has drifted is enough to fail validation.
- CMU clock correct. Settings → Clock on the car’s screen. After any battery disconnect, assume it reset and verify the date too.
- Update both apps. Android Auto and Google Play services, from the Play Store. Appuals and autoevolution both list stale versions as a cause on their own.
- Clear cache, then storage. Settings → Apps → Android Auto → Storage. Cache first; if error 8 survives, clear storage and expect to redo the first-run prompts.
- Short data cable. Under 1 m, data rated, in the phone-icon port. Android Auto won’t connect covers the charge-only cable trap.
- Reboot the CMU. Hold Nav + Back + Volume/Mute for about 10 seconds. The unit restarts and erases nothing. See reboot and reset.
- Re-pair from scratch. In the phone’s Android Auto settings, forget the Mazda under previously connected cars, delete the phone from the CMU’s device list, then connect fresh and accept every prompt.
If all seven fail, stop treating it as error 8 and work the full ladder on Android Auto won’t connect: cable, port, hub, firmware, phone settings, in that order.
