ND Miata Trunk: Dimensions, What Fits, and How to Open It
- Trunk volume: 4.59 cu ft soft top; 4.48 cu ft RF (Mazda, 2019).
- Opening: about 30–31.5 in wide by 13 in front to back in soft-top and RF owner measurements.
- Luggage: soft bags use the irregular space best. One roller may fit; two full-size hard carry-ons are uncertain (owner packing reports).
Opening and recessed well
Lid, seal, and opening
The opening is about 30–31.5 in wide by 13 in front to back
Section titled “The opening is about 30–31.5 in wide by 13 in front to back”| Car | Opening, side to side × front to back | Maximum depth inside |
|---|---|---|
| Soft top | 31.5 × 13 in from one early ND owner; 79 × 34 cm (31.1 × 13.4 in) in a 2016 video report | 54 cm (21.3 in) in that video report |
| RF | 77 × 34 cm (30.3 × 13.4 in) from one RF owner | 46 cm (18.1 in) from the same owner |
These opening and interior figures are individual measurements, not Mazda clearance specifications. The early ND owner measured floor-to-lid height at 14.5 in near the latch, 18.5 in at the front, and 10.5 in over a side shelf. Measure the whole bag, including wheels and handles, and test it in the car if fit is close.
Soft bags fit most easily; hard carry-ons depend on size
Section titled “Soft bags fit most easily; hard carry-ons depend on size”| Item | What owners report |
|---|---|
| Duffels and backpacks | Two soft bags can fill the well for a weekend trip (ND owner discussion). |
| One carry-on roller | Some fit, including hard shells. Check wheels and handles (RF example). |
| Two hard carry-ons | Smaller cases sometimes fit; two maximum-size US carry-ons failed in this renter’s test. |
| Golf clubs | Owners use compact bags or remove woods from a full set (golf-bag thread). |
The RF roof folds outside the luggage well. Secure any cargo in the passenger area away from the driver’s footwell and observe the car’s payload limit.
The bumper button is near the plate; the key and cabin button also work
Section titled “The bumper button is near the plate; the key and cabin button also work”The US 2024 manual lists three opening controls. Equipment varies by year and market.
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Normal opening | Press the cabin release or key button, or press the bumper opener near the license plate with the transmitter nearby. If the bumper button hesitates, try a firm press with the key close to the rear (owner reports). |
| Key left inside | On advanced-keyless cars, a key in the locked trunk triggers warning beeps. Press the bumper opener to retrieve it; follow the manual if the recovered key is suspended. |
| Dead vehicle battery | Restore power first. If the trunk still will not open, use the manual’s emergency trim-access procedure for that roof type. Mazda warns against forcing an RF trunk while the rear roof is out of position. |
| Release clicks, lid stays shut | Check for cargo pressing against the latch after opening. One owner found a briefcase blocking it (latch report). |
After closing the lid, pull up to confirm it latched.
Wet trunk: check the seal, third brake light, and deck-panel grommet
Section titled “Wet trunk: check the seal, third brake light, and deck-panel grommet”ND owners have traced water to a displaced weatherstrip (2016 ND report), the area around the third brake light (drain discussion), and a deck-panel grommet (leak investigation). Lift the liner after rain to find where the padding first gets wet. Then have someone watch inside while applying water to one exterior area at a time. If the area behind the seats is wet too, inspect the roof drains. Dry the padding after fixing the entry point.
The light goes out when shut; US cars have no factory spare
Section titled “The light goes out when shut; US cars have no factory spare”With its switch ON, the factory trunk light lights with the lid open and goes out when it closes. The US-market 2024 MX-5 carries a puncture-repair kit instead of a factory spare tire; its location varies by specification.
