Mazda Backup Camera: No Image and the 6023G Recall Fix
A Gen 6 Mazda Connect backup camera that shows a black or blue image, flickering, or “crazy lines” in reverse is almost always the camera module or its tailgate wiring, not the infotainment computer. The single biggest known cause is Mazda recall 6023G (NHTSA campaign 23V487000), which covers 227,335 vehicles and pays for the fix. If the whole screen is dead, radio and maps included, the camera is fine and the CMU is the problem.
The CMU is Mazda’s Connectivity Master Unit, the computer behind the dash that draws the screen. The camera feeds it a video signal over a harness through the tailgate or rear bumper. Faults split cleanly by where the picture fails.

Recall 6023G is the free fix for 2014-2018 Mazda3 hatch and 2016-2021 CX-3

The scope is the 2014-2018 Mazda3 5-door hatchback and 2016-2021 CX-3 (mazda.oemdtc.com 6023G). The sedan and other models are not covered.
The mechanism is mechanical, not electronic. An improperly designed wiring-harness fastener lets vibration from normal driving, especially from closing the liftgate, damage the harness over time. That wears out the connector pins, which raises electrical resistance and distorts the video signal (The Car Connection). That is why the failure progresses: lines first, then a blue or black screen as the pins degrade further.
The dealer remedy is free. Mazda inspects the camera, adds a wiring-harness fastening seal, and replaces the camera if distortion or flickering is present (mazda.oemdtc.com 6023G). Owner notification began September 12, 2023, and the expected failure rate is 3% or less (Cars.com). Check your VIN before paying for anything: Mazda at 800-222-5500 (option 6), or NHTSA at 888-327-4236. Owners confirm the fix is being done; a 2015 Mazda3 hatch owner reported bringing the car in specifically for 6023G (r/mazda3).
Camera or CMU: where the picture fails tells you which
Section titled “Camera or CMU: where the picture fails tells you which”The diagnostic is one test: shift to reverse and watch the whole screen.
Reverse view only. If radio, maps, and menus all work but the camera image is black, blue, distorted, or full of lines, the fault is the camera or its wiring. Everything upstream of the video input is healthy.
Whole screen dead. If radio and maps are also gone, the CMU or display has failed and the camera is irrelevant. Mazda’s own FAQ documents a known case where the screen goes black but the backup camera still works, which points to a display-side fault (faq.mazdausa.com). Owners report whole-screen blackouts on the 2021 CX-9 and CX-50 that a soft reset sometimes clears. For that path, work black screen and reboots instead.
The degradation pattern is the recall signature. A CX-5 owner described the camera starting with “crazy lines across the screen,” then progressing to a full blue screen in reverse (r/mazda). That matches the worn-connector-pin mechanism: resistance climbs, the signal corrupts, the picture drops.
Check the reverse-light fuse and tailgate connector before the camera

The same reverse-gear signal that powers the reverse lamps, routed through the Transaxle Range Switch, triggers it. Shifting to R sends the circuit to power and signals both the lamps and the camera (Mazda6Club, MazdaForum). Mazda’s manual confirms it: shift to R with the ignition on and the display switches to the rear view monitor; shift out and it reverts (Mazda owner’s manual).
That shared circuit gives you a free test. Reverse lights out too. If the camera never appears and the reverse lamps are also dead, suspect a blown reverse-light fuse or an open in the trigger circuit, not the camera. Fuse cavity and amperage vary by model and year; read the label inside your fuse box or the owner’s-manual diagram. Mazda’s guidance: if a fuse blows again after replacement, stop using that system and see a dealer (Mazda owner’s manual fuses).
Stuck on in gear. The same circuit failing the other way leaves the system thinking it is in reverse. Owners report the rear camera staying on in drive or park, which is a stuck or shorted reverse signal at the transaxle range switch (r/mazda).
The tailgate or liftgate connector is the known weak point. The recall blames harness damage from liftgate-closing vibration and worn pins, so on any model, recall or not, reseating that connector is the first physical check (mazda.oemdtc.com 6023G). Two more triggers: an image that comes on only “sometimes” and worsens over time points to a loose connection, reported on a 2017 Mazda6 where resets and the latest software update did not fix it (r/mazda); and a camera that dies right after a battery disconnect can need the CMU to re-initialize (r/mazda).
Missing guide lines: static is software, dynamic needs the right camera

Dynamic, steering-linked path-assist lines are different. They are controlled in the Instrument Cluster module 720, AS-built block 720-04-27, byte B2, bit b3: 0 is a camera without path-assist lines, 1 is a camera with them. This is confirmed on SkyActiv Mazda3, Mazda6, and CX-5 (FORScan ASBuilt thread). You flip the bit with FORScan and an OBD adapter.
The catch is hardware. The bit only does anything if the car already has a CAN-bus-capable camera. On a car with the analog camera it does nothing, and a real retrofit means a 7-pin CAN-bus camera such as the Mazda6 GL/GJ part GMC8-67-RC0A, plus the 720-04-27 edit and the 720-04-01 checksum (Mazda3Revolution). Owners confirm dynamic lines ship only on higher trims with 3D or 360 cameras and full park assist; base and mid trims have static lines and no toggle for the moving ones (MazdaForum). If your car never had the hardware, no coding adds them.
Dealer vs DIY: recall scope decides it
Section titled “Dealer vs DIY: recall scope decides it”In recall scope. If you have a 2014-2018 Mazda3 hatch or a 2016-2021 CX-3, go to the dealer. The camera, the harness seal, and the labor are free under 6023G. Paying out of pocket for a covered repair is the wrong move.
Outside recall. Confirm the reverse lights work to clear the fuse and trigger circuit, reseat the tailgate connector, and run the whole-screen test to rule out the CMU. These cost nothing and resolve a large share of “camera dead” cases.
Camera replacement. If the module itself is gone, it is a moderate DIY job on most models, and OEM-fit aftermarket cameras cost far less than the dealer part. CX-5 OEM part numbers are K015-67-RC0 / -RC0A (and the KD33-67-RC0 family) for 2013-2016 (Master Tailgaters) and K123-67-RC0 for 2017-2023 (Amazon). The dealer route is expensive because the part dominates the bill: RepairPal estimates a CX-5 camera replacement at $1,258 to $1,295, parts around $1,180 and labor only $78 to $115; older 2013-2017 cars run roughly $714 to $886 and newer 2019-2024 cars roughly $1,639 to $1,699 (RepairPal). Confirm the exact part number per VIN before buying; numbers change across years and trims.
Dynamic-line coding. This needs FORScan, an OBD adapter, and a compatible CAN-bus camera. Not a job to pay a dealer for.
The ND MX-5 camera is a later, lower-volume add, and the 6023G recall does not cover the MX-5. Treat MX-5 coverage as outside this recall.
