NC MX-5 (2006-2015) Buying Guide: Buy a 2009+ Manual NC2/NC3

The short answer: buy a 2009-or-later manual NC. The 2009 facelift (NC2) gave the manual-transmission cars forged internals and an oil cooler, fixed most of the early-car annoyances, and is the version owners report renewing engines on far less often. Every NC uses the same 2.0L engine in the US market, so you are choosing on generation, transmission, and roof, not on power.

The NC1, NC2, and NC3 differ on engine internals and suspension, not horsepower

The NC ran three sub-generations: NC1 (2006-2008), the NC2 facelift (2009-2012), and the NC3 update (2013-2015) (Wikipedia). US output stays the same 170 bhp across all of them. The 2009 cars carry a 167 hp figure, but that reflects a measurement-standard change, not a real power drop (OnAllCylinders).

The engine upgrades and the 7,200 rpm redline arrived with the 2009 manual; NC3 added the throttle retune, a brake-booster tweak, standard DSC, and a simplified Sport / Club / Grand Touring lineup (OnAllCylinders).

Every US NC uses the 2.0L MZR LF-VE inline-four, 1,999 cc, 170 bhp (later rated 167 hp), 140 lb-ft of torque (Wikipedia; UltimateSpecs). Europe also got a 1.8L MZR making 126 bhp, manual-only, which US buyers will not encounter (Wikipedia).

There was never a factory 2.5L NC. The popular “2.5 swap” drops a larger MZR/Duratec from the shared engine family into the car, and owners commonly recommend buying a cheaper NC1 and swapping if the original motor fails (r/MiataNC). Treat any “2.5” listing as an aftermarket swap and verify the work.

Transmissions: a 5-speed manual (Base/Touring on the NC1, Sport on the NC3), a 6-speed Aisin AZ6 manual on the other trims, and an optional 6-speed Activematic automatic. The trim-to-gearbox pairing shifted across the run, so verify the gearbox on the specific car (Wikipedia; OnAllCylinders).

One detail changes which NC to buy: only the manual NC2/NC3 received the forged internals. Automatic NC2 and NC3 engines carry the same part number as the NC1 (r/Miata engine-renewals thread). If engine strength is your reason for buying a 2009+ car, buy the manual.

Owners on r/Miata report that NC1 listings disproportionately show “recently renewed engine,” around 40-50% in some used markets, while NC2 listings rarely do; the explanation is the forged manual internals and oil cooler (r/Miata). Treat that as owner sentiment from used-listing patterns, not a published reliability dataset. The same thread reports a 260,000-mile NC2 still on its original engine.

Maintained NCs daily well. Owners report running NC2 cars as everyday drivers for years on nothing more than regular servicing (r/Miata).

The Power Retractable Hard Top arrived in July 2006, a polycarbonate roof by Webasto that folds or deploys in about 12 seconds without eating trunk space (Wikipedia; OnAllCylinders). No other Miata generation offered it; the ND’s hardtop equivalent is the later RF fastback.

The penalty is weight: the soft-top weighs 2,450 lb and the PRHT 2,542 lb, a ~92 lb difference by curb weight; OnAllCylinders cites the PRHT as adding 78 lb (Wikipedia; OnAllCylinders).

  • Daily comfort. Buy the PRHT for coupe-like security, a quieter cabin, and a fixed roof you never operate by hand.
  • Track use. Skip the PRHT. You cannot fit a roll bar under it, so there is no HPDE roll protection, and it is heavier and more expensive to repair than a soft top (r/MiataNC).

A PRHT buzz or rattle on the highway is common and fixable: tighten the center latch so the roof pulls in tighter, grease the lateral alignment pins, and wrap the stakes in electrical tape. The roof will not operate unless the brake is pressed, and it can fault after a flat battery (r/MiataNC).

Check oil burn, the coolant tank, and diff whine before you buy

Work this list on the test drive and inspection. Oil burn and a cracked coolant tank top it; the coolant tank is a cheap fix, a differential whine is not. Costs are owner-reported.

One gauge to know about: the NC coolant temperature gauge is non-linear by design. It sits mid-range and barely moves until something is wrong, so owners recommend an OBD2 reader for real coolant temps (r/MiataNC). On a PRHT car, verify the roof motor and mechanism documentation, since that is the most complex thing to fix later (TopMiata).

Recall note: NHTSA recall 06V103000 (April 2006) covered a driver-side frontal airbag whose horn-assembly bolt could fail during deployment in extreme cold; dealers replaced the module free (Cars.com). Confirm it was completed on any 2006 car.

NC vs ND: cheaper and more analog, or lighter and more refined

Both are 2.0L rear-drive roadsters, but they aim at different buyers.

The NC is the budget, purist, modification-friendly pick with hydraulic steering and the PRHT option. The ND is faster, lighter, more refined, and more comfortable to daily, with modern infotainment and safety tech, for roughly $10,000 more (Worth Driving NC vs ND). Used NC prices in 2025 run roughly $7,000-$15,000 across the full year span (TopMiata).

Buy the NC if you want a cheap, tactile, easy-to-modify roadster. Buy the ND if you want the quicker, more refined daily and can spend the extra.
