Android Auto Black Bars: The DPI Fix
Black bars around Android Auto on a Gen 6 Mazda Connect screen are a resolution and DPI negotiation problem. The panel is a fixed 7-inch 800x480 display; the fix is getting Android Auto to render for that panel instead of letterboxing a size it negotiated wrong.

Coolwalk made a small screen smaller
Section titled “Coolwalk made a small screen smaller”Since January 2023, Android Auto uses the Coolwalk dashboard, a split-panel layout Google pushed to all users after announcing it at CES 2023. On 800x480 the taskbar and dashboard cards take their cut of an already small panel, so the map renders smaller than the old full-bleed layout even with no black bars.
There is no clean off switch. Uninstalling the Android Auto app’s updates reverts the layout, but only until the Play Store pushes the next update. A map that shares the screen with cards is Coolwalk, and the adapter DPI override is the only lever that changes how much of it fits.
Wired fix: allow up to 1080p in developer settings

- Open Android Auto’s settings on the phone (phone Settings, search “Android Auto”).
- Scroll to Version and tap it about 10 times until developer settings unlock.
- In developer settings, set Video resolution to Allow up to 1080p.
- Unplug, replug, and check the screen.
Raising the cap changes what the phone offers during resolution negotiation. Owner reports on the 800x480 Mazda panel are consistent: units that were letterboxing fill the screen after this change. If it does nothing on yours, set it back.
Adapter fix: override DPI to 155–160
Section titled “Adapter fix: override DPI to 155–160”If an AAWireless or Carsifi adapter is already in the car, its companion app is the cleanest fix. Both expose a DPI override, and owners report values around 155–160 reclaim the full panel. Android Auto defaults to 160 DPI on this screen, so small moves matter; try 160 first, then step down.
The adapter presents itself to the car as a wired phone, so it inherits every wired fault. If Android Auto is broken outright rather than letterboxed, fix wired first: Android Auto won’t connect.
What cannot change: the 800x480 panel and the commander knob

Android Auto streams H.264 at that resolution, and no firmware, tweak, or adapter raises it. The input. Filling the screen does not enable touch. Gen 6 Mazda Connect disables touch in Android Auto at any speed, so the commander knob drives it either way; see Android Auto touchscreen.
