Before You Buy ScreenTune — Compatibility Checklist

ScreenTune targets one specific configuration: a factory Gen 6 Mazda Connect CMU running firmware v74.00.324A. Everything below confirms your car is that configuration before you spend money. Run through it once; it takes a few minutes and tells you whether ScreenTune will run on your car — or what to fix first.

The version string is the single most important fact. Open Settings > System > About and read the firmware line.

The supported target is v74.00.324A, exactly.

For more detail, the diagnostic menu shows OS version and region together. Press and hold Volume/Mute + Music + Favorites/Star for 3–5 seconds. Record both:

  • OS version (e.g. 74.00.324A)
  • Region code (e.g. NA N, EU N, 4A N)

Full instructions are on check firmware.

What your version means:

  • 74.00.324A — the target. Proceed.
  • 55.x, 59.x, 70.x, or older — Gen 6 hardware, old firmware. You can update to the target first; see getting to v74.00.324A.
  • 74.00.331 — newer than the target. Do not assume a clean update or rollback path exists. See not supported yet.

Step 2: Confirm the generation, not the badge

Section titled “Step 2: Confirm the generation, not the badge”

The supported line runs through the CMU, not the model name. A 2018 CX-5 is Gen 6 and in; a 2021 CX-5 is Gen 7 and out, same badge. The screen is the quick tell: Gen 6 units are 7-inch or 8.8-inch. A 10.25-inch screen is Gen 7 — stop here.

These North American model years shipped with Gen 6 CMUs and are backed by source documentation:

  • 2014–2018 Mazda3
  • 2016–2021 Mazda6
  • 2016–2021 CX-3
  • 2016–2020 CX-5
  • 2016–2020 CX-9
  • 2016–2023 ND MX-5

These need manual review even though the CMU may be Gen 6 — region, history, or hardware can change the answer:

  • Fiat 124 Spider
  • Non-North-American Gen 6 vehicles
  • Regional Gen 6 models not listed above
  • Cars with wireless CarPlay, prior AIO/root history, or wrong-region firmware

These are Gen 7 (or later) and not supported:

  • 2019+ Mazda3
  • 2021+ CX-5 and CX-9 (North America)
  • CX-30, CX-50, CX-60, CX-70, CX-80, CX-90
  • 2024+ MX-5 (ND3)

If you’re unsure which generation you have, MZD Connect generations and supported vehicles break down the dividing lines.

The region code sits next to the firmware version on the About screen. North American firmware is confirmed supported. Other regions can work but go through manual review — see firmware region codes for what the codes mean, then contact support to submit yours.

CarPlay configuration rarely blocks compatibility, but wireless hardware is the exception, so write down which you have:

  • Factory CarPlay — shipped with the car or dealer-installed
  • Retrofit CarPlay — added later via Mazda’s official kit
  • Wireless CarPlay adapter — third-party dongle in the CarPlay USB port
  • Wireless replacement hub — P-series or similar hub with built-in wireless
  • Native wireless-capable CMU — newer/replacement hardware
  • No CarPlay

When the underlying CMU and firmware are supported, wired configurations are generally fine. Wireless hubs and adapters can need review. Note the model, whether wired CarPlay works without the adapter, and whether wireless connects reliably — include that in your intake if anything is uncertain. If you don’t have CarPlay and want it, CarPlay options covers what’s possible on Gen 6.

Previous changes to the CMU affect whether a clean install is safe. Note:

  • Has AIO (MZD-AIO Tweaks) been installed before? Yes / No / Unknown
  • Has the unit been rooted? Yes / No / Unknown
  • Are any tweaks currently active?
  • Has a dealer updated the firmware recently?

If any answer is yes or unknown, read known risky configurations and backup and recovery before ordering.

ScreenTune is one product, self-certified at checkout — there’s no per-car intake. It fits any supported Gen 6 car already on v74.00.324A:

  • 2014–2018 Mazda3, 2016–2021 Mazda6, 2016–2021 CX-3, 2016–2020 CX-5, 2016–2020 CX-9, and the 2016–2023 ND MX-5.

Edge cases (a Fiat 124 Spider, a non–North-American Gen 6 unit, or anything you’re unsure about) go through a manual review first. Contact support with your firmware version, region code, and model year.
