ND Miata DSC OFF Button: One Press Off, Holding Rearms DSC

The DSC OFF button on the lower dash disables the ND’s traction control (TCS) and stability control (DSC) with a single press, and on 2022+ cars the same press also disables Kinematic Posture Control (KPC). The owner’s manual is unambiguous: “Press the DSC OFF switch to turn off the TCS/DSC.” That one press is the whole interface. There is no partial mode on 2016–2023 cars, no hidden hold gesture for a deeper off, and the popular advice to hold the button for a full defeat is not just wrong but backwards.

One press disables everything the button can disable

What a single press turns off depends on model year:

KPC has no switch of its own and no indicator light; the manual confirms “the KPC operation can be stopped by operating the DSC OFF switch,” so on 2022+ cars it goes down with the ship. ABS is unaffected by the button and always stays active.

This is a real difference from other Mazdas. On a Mazda3 or CX-5, a short press typically disables traction control only. The MX-5 gives you the whole package with one press.

Holding the button re-enables DSC, it does not disable more

Other cars train drivers that press means traction-off and hold means everything-off. The ND inverts this. Per the owner’s manual, if the DSC OFF switch is held for 10 seconds or more, a switch-malfunction detection function operates and DSC reactivates automatically. The car assumes a stuck button and turns the safety net back on.

So the complete, correct interface on a 2016–2023 ND:

  • Press once: TCS and DSC (and KPC on 2022+) off. DSC OFF light on.
  • Press again: everything back on.
  • Hold 10+ seconds: DSC turns itself back on. There is nothing to gain by holding.
  • Every engine start: everything back on, regardless of where you left it, per the manual.

The reset at every start matters at track days and autocross: pressing the button becomes part of the grid routine, because the car quietly rearms itself between runs if you cycle the ignition.

Two cases, one documented and one owner-reported:

Documented: even with DSC off, the manual notes DSC reactivates momentarily while Smart Brake Support or Mazda Radar Cruise Control operates, on cars equipped with those systems.

Observed: owners who slide NDs hard report the car cutting throttle and re-engaging stability control mid-slide with the light out. That behavior, and what it means at the limit, is covered on the driving page.

The DSC-TRACK switch on the 2024+ Club has its own rules

The ND3 Club adds a second, checkered-flag switch for DSC-TRACK, an intermediate mode that reduces how often TCS and DSC intervene without disabling them. Its controls are unusual, and both quirks are manual-confirmed:

  • Activation is a hold, at a standstill. Power the car on, then hold the DSC-TRACK switch with the vehicle stopped until it chimes. Press again to deactivate.
  • Holding 10+ seconds locks it on. After that, neither the DSC-TRACK switch nor DSC OFF changes anything until you power the car off and on.

The regular DSC OFF button still works on the ND3 exactly as on earlier cars, so the Club effectively has three levels: everything on, DSC-TRACK, and off. What DSC-TRACK changes at track pace is on the driving page.
