ND MX-5 Mechanical Issues and Quirks
The ND MX-5 is one of the more reliable cars Mazda has built, but it has a handful of known issues and a longer list of normal-but-alarming quirks. This page covers the mechanical and electrical side. For screen, Bluetooth, and Mazda Connect problems, see Common complaints.
A note worth making up front: low battery voltage produces infotainment symptoms (reboots, slow boot, dropped Bluetooth) that look exactly like a head-unit fault. Rule out the battery before chasing the CMU. Details under Electrical below.
Engine and Drivetrain
Section titled “Engine and Drivetrain”Crankshaft Position Sensor Failure
Section titled “Crankshaft Position Sensor Failure”- Affected: Primarily 2016-2017 ND1 (Skyactiv-G 2.0, PE-VPS)
- Symptoms: No-start, rough idle, intermittent stalling, CEL with a P0335/P0336 code
- Cause: Sensor degradation; heat-soak makes it worse, so the car often restarts after cooling
- Fix: Replace the crankshaft position sensor
- Cost: Roughly $100-200 with labor; the part alone is around $50 and it’s an accessible DIY
Clutch Judder (Cold)
Section titled “Clutch Judder (Cold)”- Affected: ND1 more than ND2
- Symptoms: Vibration during clutch take-up when cold, worst in first and reverse
- Cause: Clutch friction-material behavior when cold. ND2 (2019+) uses a dual-mass flywheel, which can add its own character here
- Resolution: Normal for the first few minutes; goes away once everything is warm
- When to worry: Judder that persists warm, or any sign of slipping under load
Transmission Notchiness (Cold)
Section titled “Transmission Notchiness (Cold)”- Affected: All ND manuals (Mazda’s own short-throw 6-speed)
- Symptoms: Stiff, notchy shifts into 1st and 2nd when cold
- Cause: 75W-90 gear oil is thick at low temperature
- Resolution: Normal; clears within 5-10 minutes of driving
- Improvement: A high-quality synthetic GL-4 fluid noticeably reduces cold notchiness. This is a common first fluid change.
Engine Oil Consumption
Section titled “Engine Oil Consumption”- Affected: Some ND1 and ND2 units
- Symptoms: Oil level drops between changes
- What’s normal: Up to about 1 quart per 5,000 miles is unremarkable. Mazda’s published specification tolerates consumption far higher than that, but rates near the spec ceiling warrant a look.
- When to investigate: More than 1 quart per 3,000 miles, or a sudden increase
- Common causes: PCV system; valve stem seals at higher mileage
See Engine oil for grade and interval guidance.
Cooling and Climate
Section titled “Cooling and Climate”A/C Evaporator Leak
Section titled “A/C Evaporator Leak”- Affected: All years
- Symptoms: Weak A/C, musty smell from the vents, damp passenger-side carpet
- Cause: Evaporator core leak, or a blocked condensate drain backing water into the cabin
- Fix: Evaporator replacement (the dash has to come out); drain cleaning if it’s just a blockage
- Cost: $800-1,500 at a dealer for evaporator replacement; the drain clean is cheap
Overcooling in Cold Weather
Section titled “Overcooling in Cold Weather”- Affected: All years
- Symptoms: Coolant temperature never quite reaches normal in winter, especially on the highway
- Cause: A small-displacement engine sheds heat fast in cold air at speed
- Resolution: Normal. Some owners run partial grille blocking in winter to hold temperature.
Body and Interior
Section titled “Body and Interior”Soft Top Drain Blockage
Section titled “Soft Top Drain Blockage”- Affected: All soft-top cars
- Symptoms: Water pooling in the trunk, wet carpet behind the seats
- Cause: The drain channels for the top’s storage cavity clog with leaves and debris
- Fix: Clear the drain tubes with compressed air or a flexible wire
- Prevention: Check quarterly and keep the channels clear
See Soft top care for inspection and conditioning.
Paint Chipping (Soul Red)
Section titled “Paint Chipping (Soul Red)”- Affected: Cars in Soul Red Metallic (41V) and Soul Red Crystal Metallic (46V)
- Symptoms: Stone chips on the hood, front bumper, and mirror caps
- Cause: The multi-layer Takuminuri process uses a thin, light-controlling color coat
- Prevention: Paint protection film on the leading edges
- Note: Not a defect; it’s inherent to how the color is built up
Wind Buffeting (Top Down)
Section titled “Wind Buffeting (Top Down)”- Affected: All soft-top cars
- Symptoms: Low-frequency pressure pulsing in the cabin at highway speed with the top down
- Cause: Aerodynamic resonance in the open cabin
- Mitigation: A wind deflector behind the seats; worst with a single occupant
- RF note: The retractable hardtop RF buffets less, thanks to the different rear-deck geometry
Squeaks and Rattles
Section titled “Squeaks and Rattles”- Affected: All years
- Common sources: Soft-top latches, door weatherstripping, center console, dash
- Diagnosis: Press on suspected panels while driving over rough surfaces to isolate the source
- Fix: Felt or flocked tape on the contact point usually does it
Electrical
Section titled “Electrical”Battery Drain
Section titled “Battery Drain”- Affected: All years, worst with short-trip use
- Symptoms: Slow crank, a flat battery after 1-2 weeks parked, and infotainment misbehavior
- Cause: The ND uses a small Group 51R battery with a modest but real parasitic draw
- Fix: A battery tender for cars that sit; replacement if the battery is more than about three years old
- Why it matters: Low voltage causes the head unit to reboot, boot slowly, and drop Bluetooth — symptoms that mimic a CMU fault. Always confirm battery health before troubleshooting the infotainment.
See Battery and winter storage for storage and charging detail.
Backup Camera Intermittent
Section titled “Backup Camera Intermittent”- Affected: All cars with a backup camera
- Symptoms: Flickering image, black screen in reverse, delayed activation
- Causes: Connector corrosion from water ingress at the trunk; camera module failure
- Fix: Check the connector behind the trunk liner first; replace the camera only if the connector is clean and tight
Suspension and Steering
Section titled “Suspension and Steering”Front Strut Top Mount Noise
Section titled “Front Strut Top Mount Noise”- Affected: All years, more common on lowered cars
- Symptoms: Clunk or pop during slow-speed turns and over bumps
- Cause: Strut top bearing wear or binding
- Fix: Replace the top mount and bearing assembly
- Cost: $100-300 in parts; labor varies
Rear Sway Bar End Link Noise
Section titled “Rear Sway Bar End Link Noise”- Affected: All years
- Symptoms: Light clunk from the rear over small bumps
- Cause: End-link bushing wear
- Fix: Replace the end links — $30-60 in parts and an easy DIY
What’s Normal vs. What Needs Attention
Section titled “What’s Normal vs. What Needs Attention”| Behavior | Normal? | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Cold clutch judder | Yes, if it clears warm | Monitor; no action |
| Cold shift notchiness | Yes, if it clears warm | Consider a synthetic GL-4 fluid |
| Oil use under 1 qt/5k mi | Yes | Check level monthly |
| Soft top creaking in cold | Yes | Normal material behavior |
| Slight wind noise, top up | Yes | Excessive noise means a weatherstrip check |
| CEL after a fill-up | Sometimes | Retighten the gas cap; diagnose if it stays on |
| A/C smell on the season’s first use | Common | Run A/C on high with windows open |
| Judder or notchiness when warm | No | Inspect clutch / driveline |
| Coolant temp high on track | No | See track cooling guidance |
