Mazda Connect CD, DVD, and TV: Check the Hardware
Factory CD, DVD, and TV were physical options, not features that every Gen 6 Mazda Connect car could unlock in software. The same screen and firmware family appeared with different media hardware by market, model, year, and trim.
The reliable check is the car itself. A factory optical drive has a narrow disc slot and an eject button. A Japanese-market TV-equipped car has TV in the Entertainment menu and the matching terrestrial tuner and antenna hardware.
CD, DVD, and TV are three separate sources

Mazda’s 2018 U.S. manual lists audio CD, MP3, WMA, and AAC playback on the factory CD player. The Japanese first-generation manual documents DVD menus, subtitles, audio tracks, and parental controls on the factory DVD player.
The Japanese TV source is a terrestrial receiver, not an internet-video app. Mazda’s TV instructions cover channel scans, Full-Seg and One-Seg reception, program information, subtitles, and emergency broadcasts.
Equipment changed by market, model, and year

These examples are boundaries, not a universal trim decoder. An imported car follows the equipment for its original sales market.
The slot and source menu identify the fitted hardware
Section titled “The slot and source menu identify the fitted hardware”Use these checks in order:
- Look for the slot. A factory drive has a narrow disc slot and a physical eject button. Mazda’s CD instructions show the controls, and Mazda notes that their shape and location vary by vehicle.
- Open Entertainment. Insert a disc, then open Entertainment and its source list. Mazda Connect skips or disables a source that is unavailable at that moment. The 2018 MX-5 manual describes that source-list behavior.
- Check the original equipment record. Use the window sticker, build sheet, or Mazda brochure for the car’s original country, model year, and trim. A generic owner’s manual often says “some models” because it covers several configurations.
- Use diagnostics as confirmation. On Gen 6 Mazda Connect, read-only diagnostic codes 9 and 10 display CD/DVD module software and part information where fitted. See the hidden-menu reference before opening the diagnostic keypad.
Do not count a USB drive, phone, portable disc player, rear-seat aftermarket screen, or replacement head unit. Those devices do not prove that the factory Mazda Connect optical or TV hardware is fitted.
Each source keeps its own controls and metadata
Section titled “Each source keeps its own controls and metadata”The factory disc service handles loading, ejecting, track selection, folders, playback position, and disc metadata. Metadata behavior varies by system version. Mazda’s Japanese CD instructions, for example, use CD-Text or embedded MP3, WMA, and AAC tags and explicitly do not use Gracenote for CD playback.
DVD and TV add their own video controls. Mazda disables the picture while the car is moving: the Japanese DVD instructions leave DVD audio playing, while the TV instructions state that TV video is not shown in motion.
USB audio, Bluetooth, AM/FM, DAB, SiriusXM, CarPlay, and Android Auto are separate sources. A missing optical drive does not remove them, and a failed disc does not by itself diagnose a fault in the rest of the audio system.
ScreenTune keeps fitted hardware enabled
Section titled “ScreenTune keeps fitted hardware enabled”ScreenTune uses the vehicle profile to identify factory disc or TV equipment. Known or reported hardware stays enabled. Uncertain equipment is preserved or sent for manual review.
