Mazda Brake Pad Replacement and the Rear EPB Catch
Replace Mazda brake pads when the friction material drops below about 3 mm (~3/16”), when a high-pitched squeal starts under braking, or immediately if you hear grinding. The job is a standard caliper-off, slide-pin disc-pad swap on the front of every Gen 6 Mazda; the MX-5 rear is similar but its piston winds in (see below). The catch is the rear of CX-5, Mazda6, CX-9, CX-30, MX-30, and 2019+ Mazda3: those cars have an electric parking brake (EPB) built into the rear caliper, and you have to put it in maintenance mode before you touch the piston or you can break the actuator motor. The MX-5 has no EPB, so MX-5 owners can skip that step entirely.

Inspect brakes at least yearly or every 10,000–12,000 miles. Pad life runs 20,000–80,000 miles depending on driving, and Mazda’s schedule calls for brake fluid every three years (Bountiful Mazda).
Rears can wear before fronts, and dealers know it

A 2023 Mazda3 owner was told the rear pads and rotors were critical at 35,000 km, and the r/mazda3 thread splits between owners who report their rears wearing that fast and owners who smell an upsell. Have the pad measured before you authorize anything. A genuine sub-3 mm pad is a real job; a pad with half its life flagged “urgent” during an oil change is a quote to question.
Dealer pricing is why people attempt this themselves. One 2020 Mazda3 owner was quoted $542 for rear pads and rotors and $617 for the front (r/mazda3); another saw roughly $420 labor plus $400 parts (r/mazda3). Doing it yourself drops the bill to the cost of a pad set, and aftermarket sets exist by application number (see Pad options below).
The electric parking brake catch: maintenance mode is mandatory on rear EPB jobs

CX-5 (2016 and up), Mazda6 (Skyactiv era, 2016+), Mazda3 (2019+ BP), CX-30, MX-30, and CX-9 use an electric parking brake: a motor on the back of each rear caliper that drives the piston out to park the car (Mazda3 owner’s manual). To fit thicker new pads you have to push that piston back into the caliper, and the motor is in the way.
Maintenance mode backs the motor off so the piston retracts cleanly. Skip it and you have two ways to do damage. Forcing the rear piston in with a C-clamp can break the EPB motor, and rotating the piston while pushing can damage the caliper’s internal parts (Mazdas247, paulstravelpictures). Owners hit this exact trap: one r/mazda thread is titled outright “2016 CX-5 Rear Brakes DONE THE WRONG WAY”, and others report a flashing red BRAKE light or a stuck EPB days after a rear job (r/mazda, r/mazda). The owner’s manual documents none of this, which is why DIYers get caught: it is a workshop and scan-tool procedure, not an owner-facing one (Mazda3 owner’s manual).
Two ways into maintenance mode:
- Scan tool (cleanest). A tool with EPB service support retracts the motors and re-engages them when you finish. On an Innova 5610 the path is Menu > Service Reset > EPB Reset > ENTER (Innova); on a Mazda-specific path it is Brake System > EPB Service (JustAnswer). The tool retracts the calipers so the brake cannot engage during service (Innova).
- Button-and-pedal sequence (no tool). On 2016–2017 CX-5 and similar: ignition ON, engine off (press Start twice without the brake); foot on brake and press the EPB switch to release; release the brake; floor the accelerator while holding the EPB switch DOWN and press Start three times quickly within about five seconds. An amber “(P!)” parking-brake light confirms the mode and you can hear the motors wind back. Exit by repeating the same dance with the EPB switch pulled UP until the light goes out (paulstravelpictures, Mazdas247).
After the job you must exit maintenance mode and confirm the EPB re-engages. If it does not retract or re-engage correctly the parking brake may not hold, or it may drag (Innova). Even owners who used maintenance mode have had the EPB stick afterward (r/mazda), so test it before the car leaves the driveway.
The MX-5 has no EPB, and its rear piston winds in

There is no maintenance mode, no service-mode sequence, nothing to wind off electrically. MX-5 owners diagnose the same way (a 2019 RF owner traced a rear grinding noise to worn rear pads) but the rear caliper job differs in one way: on the NC the parking brake is integrated into the rear caliper, so the rear piston must be wound in with a screw-in tool, not pushed straight back (MX-5 Owners Club).
That is the split worth keeping straight. On EPB cars the rear piston pushes straight back like a front caliper once the motor is backed off. On the MX-5 NC the rear piston screws in. Never wind an EPB piston (the motor will not allow it and forcing it breaks the motor), and never just push a wind-in piston.
Front pads and MX-5 rears are a standard slide-pin job; EPB rears add one step

- Lift the car. Loosen the lug nuts, chock the opposite wheel, lift, support on stands, remove the wheel.
- Enter maintenance mode. EPB rear only (above), before touching the piston.
- Unbolt the caliper. Remove the guide (slide) pins and swing the caliper off the bracket. Hang it from the spring; do not let it dangle on the hose.
- Remove the pads. Pull the old pads and the anti-rattle clips.
- Retract the piston. Push straight back on fronts and on EPB rears in maintenance mode; wind in on the MX-5 NC rear. Watch the master-cylinder reservoir so it does not overflow as fluid backs up.
- Inspect the rotor. Look for deep scoring, a wear lip at the edge, and blue heat spots. Measure thickness against the minimum figure stamped on the rotor hat; resurface or replace if it is below spec or badly grooved. Do NOT rotate the EPB rear piston while pushing it in (paulstravelpictures).
- Lubricate and reassemble. Lube the guide pins and pad contact points, fit the new pads and clips, reinstall the caliper, and torque the bolts to spec.
- Exit maintenance mode. EPB rear only, then pump the pedal and confirm the EPB engages and releases.
- Bed in. Pump the pedal firm before you move the car, torque the lug nuts, then bed the pads in with a series of moderate stops.
Pad options: ceramic for quiet daily, aggressive for heat

Quality aftermarket sets exist by application number. For the CX-5 rear “1846” application, the paulstravelpictures guide lists Power Stop 16-1846, ACDelco 17D1846CH (ceramic), Raybestos EHT1846H, and KFE KFE1846-104, with matching rotors DuraGo BR90119602, Raybestos 981008R, and ACDelco 18A2964AC.
As general guidance, not a spec: ceramic pads run quieter, throw less dust, and last longer, which suits daily driving; semi-metallic and OEM-style pads bite harder and tolerate heat better at the cost of more dust and noise. MX-5 track drivers typically step up to performance pads. Owners do go aftermarket, for instance a 2.5T Mazda3 owner running Power Stop Z23 rotors and carbon-ceramic pads, and others trade brand experiences in this r/mazda3 thread.
Torque specs vary by model, year, and axle: confirm yours

CX-5 figures are from forum members citing the service manual (Mazdas247), with the rear values corroborated on the paulstravelpictures guide. MX-5 NC figures are service-manual-derived via the MX-5 Owners Club. Two more CX-5 values: the bleeder valve is 62–86 in-lbf (6.9–9.8 N·m) and lug nuts are 80–108 lb-ft (108–147 N·m) (paulstravelpictures).
ND MX-5 figures surfaced in forum search but the source pages would not load directly, so treat these as forum-reported and verify against an ND workshop manual: bracket-to-knuckle front 90 N·m (~66 lb-ft) and rear 59 N·m (~44 lb-ft); caliper-to-bracket front 35 N·m (~26 lb-ft) and rear 23 N·m (~17 lb-ft) (miata.net). Front and rear differ on every Mazda here, and Mazda3 and CX-30 exact figures were not confirmed in a citable table. Pull your own model-year-axle figure from the workshop manual rather than copying one number across the car.
