Mazda Octane by Engine: When 87 Is Fine and What 93 Buys
Almost every US-market Mazda runs on regular 87 octane and reaches its rated power on it. The naturally aspirated Skyactiv-G engines in the CX-5 2.5 S, Mazda3, CX-30, and CX-50 are designed for 87 and gain nothing measurable from premium. Two exceptions matter: the MX-5 Miata, where Mazda recommends premium to hit full output, and the 2.5 Turbo, where premium buys a published 23-29 horsepower at the top end. No Mazda gasoline engine is flex-fuel; the hard limit is 10% ethanol.

The naturally aspirated 2.5 makes the same power on 87 and 93
Section titled “The naturally aspirated 2.5 makes the same power on 87 and 93”For the US CX-5 2.5 S, Mazda publishes one power figure for both fuels: “up to 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque with either regular 87 octane or premium 93 octane fuel,” per the 2025 CX-5 pricing release. Same number, either pump. The owner’s manual lists the requirement as “87 [(R+M)/2 method] or above (91 RON or above),” per the 2025 CX-5 manual fuel page.
The mechanism is compression ratio. US-market Skyactiv-G runs 13:1 and is tuned around 87-octane AKI using Mazda’s high-tumble combustion design plus knock sensing. International versions of the same displacement run 14:1 and recommend premium for roughly 5% more rated power. That split is why a “high-compression” engine still runs fine on regular here, and why owners trade confused threads about it, like this r/mazda3 question on why a high-compression engine doesn’t need premium.
What premium actually buys on the NA 2.5 is close to nothing. An AAA-cited test referenced on the Mazdas247 forum found about 2.38% more power on 93 vs 87 for the NA Skyactiv-G 2.0, below the threshold most drivers can feel. Some owners report a subjective top-end difference. On r/mazda3 one writes, “I noticed a big difference between 87/89 but didn’t see near the jump 89/93,” and another runs mid-grade in a 2015 Mazda3 2.5 and feels it “in the top end.” Treat that as a perceived difference, not a measured one. The forum consensus on the CX-5 octane poll is blunt: 88.5% run 87, and higher octane gives the NA engine no MPG or power benefit.
The thing that does matter on the NA cars is detergent quality, not octane. Buying Top Tier 87 (Shell, Costco) keeps the intake and injectors clean, which the same threads recommend over chasing octane.
The MX-5 Miata is the one naturally aspirated Mazda that wants premium

Mazda recommends “Premium unleaded fuel 91 [(R+M)/2 method] or above (96 RON or above),” and the manual states that regular 87 “will reduce performance slightly, such as reduced engine output, and engine knocking,” per the 2022 MX-5 manual fuel page. Run 91 to get the rated output. The car will run on 87 without damage, but it gives up a little power doing it. Fuel rated below 87 is the line not to cross: the manual warns it “could also cause engine knocking and serious engine damage.” Dealer guidance corroborates the split, listing the Miata and MX-5 RF as premium-recommended while the NA CX-5, Mazda3, CX-30, and CX-50 take regular.
The 2.5 Turbo: 87 is safe, 93 buys 23-29 horsepower

The CX-5 figure comes straight from the 2025 CX-5 release: “256 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium 93 octane fuel. On regular, 87 octane fuel, the engine will provide 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque.” The Mazda3 number is from the 2021 Mazda3 2.5 Turbo release: “250 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque with premium (93 octane) fuel or a solid 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque with regular (87 octane) fuel.” The CX-9 matches the Mazda3, per Flagship Mazda’s spec page. Note the regular rating is the same 227 hp / 310 lb-ft across all three; only the premium number differs, so do not quote 256 hp for a Mazda3 or CX-9.
Premium is recommended, not required, on the turbo. The ECU pulls timing and boost to prevent knock when you feed it 87, which is why owners report it “doesn’t de-tune itself to prevent knock until around 4000 RPM,” from the CX-9 octane poll. Below that, everyday low-RPM driving feels nearly identical on either fuel, and knock management means 87 won’t shorten the engine’s life. That tracks with how owners actually fuel up: in that poll of 36 turbo owners, 52.8% run 87 and 25% run 91.
So premium on the turbo buys the top-end rated power, which you only reach under hard acceleration, towing, or sustained high-RPM driving. A few owners also report better highway economy on premium. On r/CX5 the representative take is, “I seriously doubt anybody would detect a difference in performance except on a dyno… For daily driving you might notice it as a slight improvement in fuel economy.” One Canadian owner logged 12.8 L/100km on premium vs 14 on regular. That is one owner’s anecdote, not a controlled test, but the instinct to run premium on the turbo for both power and economy is common. If you bought the turbo for the performance, feed it 93; if it is a daily commuter, 87 is fine and safe.
The hard limit: 10% ethanol, no methanol, unleaded only

The owner’s manual is explicit: “This vehicle can only use oxygenated fuels containing no more than 10% ethanol by volume,” per the 2025 CX-5 manual. That rules out E15 and E85, both of which exceed the cap. The manual continues that “Damage to the vehicle may occur when ethanol exceeds this recommendation, or if the gasoline contains any methanol,” and fuels above 10% ethanol or containing any methanol may not be covered under warranty.
Two more absolutes. Use only unleaded fuel: leaded gasoline destroys the catalytic converter and O2 sensors. And the ethanol cap holds regardless of octane, so an 87 and a 93 pump are bound by the same 10% limit.
One note on diesel, since it comes up: the Skyactiv-D 2.2L diesel was offered in the US CX-5 for the 2019 model year only and dropped in January 2021. It takes ultra-low-sulfur diesel, not gasoline, and octane does not apply to it.
Run 87 in most Mazdas, 91 in the Miata, 93 in the turbo only if you push it

- MX-5 Miata. Run 91. The manual recommends it for full output; 87 costs you a little power.
- 2.5 Turbo. Run 93 if you want the rated 250-256 hp or drive it hard; 87 is safe and fine for commuting, just down 23-29 hp at the top.
- Every gasoline Mazda. Stay at or below 10% ethanol, never use methanol blends, and only ever run unleaded.
