Press mute during a podcast over CarPlay and the amplifier goes silent while the episode keeps playing underneath; notice an hour later and you’ve burned through three episodes. The same press pauses over plain Bluetooth, and Mazda’s next-generation wheels replaced mute with a real pause button. Hotkeys catches the mute press and sends CarPlay an actual play/pause.
Stock, mute zeroes the amplifier and playback runs on silently underneath. The Hotkeys daemon watches the head unit’s own mute signal and sends CarPlay a real play/pause through the same internal channel the factory software uses for CarPlay keys, so the podcast stops where you left it.
The button fires two paths at once: one silences the amplifier directly, one goes through the key map. Over plain Bluetooth, Mazda’s software pauses; over CarPlay it never sends the key. Mazda’s fix, a real pause button on the wheel, arrived only with the next generation. Gen 6 cars kept the mute.
The head unit assigns every wheel and console button one fixed job in its own key map. Hotkeys edits that file, with the original backed up first and restored automatically if the edit fails validation. The mute reassignment ships first; opening up the other buttons (the phone pair you never press could be track skip) is what the beta shapes.
The earliest of the betas. The first design waited on the remapped key and never saw it, because mute also fires through a separate audio path; the rebuild listens to that path directly. Invites go out when the pause is proven end to end.

The nine the head unit owns: volume up and down, next and previous track, mode, mute, voice, and the phone pickup and hangup pair. The build in beta remaps mute to play/pause; assignments for the rest are being added, and the original key map is backed up before any change.
The remap side works everywhere, because it changes what the buttons emit at the head unit level. The play/pause daemon is CarPlay only: it sends CarPlay key events, and Android Auto uses a different path on these units.
No. Stock v74 already routes the steering-wheel talk button to Siri when CarPlay is active, and Hotkeys leaves voice controls alone.
