The first Hotkeys build watched the right mute signal but sent Mazda CarPlay key 7. Static firmware analysis proves key 7 is HID Play, not Pause or Play/Pause, which explains why active playback continued.

The missing pause path,
now understood.
Press mute during a podcast over CarPlay and the amplifier goes silent while the episode keeps playing underneath. Our first build reached Mazda’s CarPlay key service, but firmware analysis and a live test proved that command is Play-only. We have now recovered a narrow explicit-Pause design; it still needs implementation and retained bench proof.

§1 · What it does
What failed, and what replaces it.
A safe explicit-Pause route
The recovered design adds the dormant CarPlay Pause capability and assigns it to an otherwise rejected internal key. Mazda’s stock Play, Next, and Previous meanings stay intact, and duplicate Pause delivery cannot resume a paused stream.
A key map you can edit
The broader remapping idea remains research. The immediate work is deliberately smaller: implement and qualify one version-locked, reversible CarPlay Pause path before making any owner-facing claim or expanding the key map.

This is research, not a working beta. The first design reached a Play-only command and did not pause. The replacement is grounded in the recovered firmware path, but invites wait until it is implemented and proven end to end.

Install from USB, then tell us
Beta builds install from a USB stick, the same flow ScreenTune uses, and remove the same way. Feedback goes straight to the developer by email.

Common questions.
Why doesn’t the mute button pause today?
The press zeroes the amplifier directly. Our first replacement sent Mazda CarPlay key 7, but that key is explicitly Play, so it cannot stop active playback. Over plain Bluetooth Mazda’s own stack does pause; owners have documented the difference for years.
Which buttons can it remap?
No remapping feature is being offered yet. The firmware exposes volume, track, mode, mute, voice, and phone inputs, but the current work is limited to safely proving one explicit CarPlay Pause command.
Does it work with Android Auto?
No. The recovered replacement is specific to the CarPlay HID path. Android Auto uses a different control stack on these units.
Does it change the talk button or Siri?
No. Stock v74 already routes the steering-wheel talk button to Siri when CarPlay is active, and Hotkeys leaves voice controls alone.
Do I need extra hardware?
The proposed design needs no extra hardware and is process-scoped and reversible, but there is no owner-ready installer until implementation and bench qualification are complete.
Which cars can join the beta?
There is no active beta yet. A future bench cohort would be limited to supported Gen 6 Mazdas on firmware v74.00.324A with factory or retrofit CarPlay.
What does the beta cost, and what am I committing to?
Nothing and nothing. Signing up puts you on the invite list. If we invite you, you get the build and instructions by email, and what we ask for is feedback on how the buttons behave in your car.
