Q01 Why doesn’t the mute button pause today? +
The press zeroes the amplifier directly, and over CarPlay no pause key is ever sent, so playback runs on silently. Over plain Bluetooth Mazda’s own stack does pause; owners have documented the difference for years. Mazda’s next-generation wheel replaced mute with a real pause button; Gen 6 never got one.
Q02 Which buttons can it remap? +
The nine the head unit owns: volume up and down, next and previous track, mode, mute, voice, and the phone pickup and hangup pair. The build in beta remaps mute to play/pause; assignments for the rest are being added, and the original key map is backed up before any change.
Q03 Does it work with Android Auto? +
The remap side works everywhere, because it changes what the buttons emit at the head unit level. The play/pause daemon is CarPlay only: it sends CarPlay key events, and Android Auto uses a different path on these units.
Q04 Does it change the talk button or Siri? +
No. Stock v74 already routes the steering-wheel talk button to Siri when CarPlay is active, and Hotkeys leaves voice controls alone.
Q05 Do I need extra hardware? +
No. It installs from a USB stick and runs on the head unit. The original key map is backed up first, and removing Hotkeys is the same USB flow in reverse.
Q06 Which cars can join the beta? +
Any supported Gen 6 Mazda on firmware v74.00.324A. The CarPlay play/pause piece additionally needs CarPlay, factory or retrofit.
Q07 What does the beta cost, and what am I committing to? +
Nothing and nothing. Signing up puts you on the invite list. If we invite you, you get the build and instructions by email, and what we ask for is feedback on how the buttons behave in your car.
